Spiritual Self Worth, Well Being and Freedom

Rob Gilbert Christian Science practitioner and teacher is speaking on spiritual self-worth heals and transforms human character the talk was given at First Church of Christ Scientist San Francisco on August 11th 2012 our relationship to God is a lot like a ray of light shining out from its source a lot like a ray of light shining out from its source and I suppose somebody could come along and try to hit the ray of light with a baseball bat or cut it with scissors or stained it with ink trap it in a box but obviously none of those things would affect the ray of light because it's defined by its source not its material surroundings in the same way you and I are defined by our source God spirit not by our material surroundings and not by our material histories either we are what God knows we are not what the world says we are what the world says we are our material personalities a mix of positive and negative impressions that have been formed over the years and these impressions more or less govern human behavior and if our behavior is good we feel good about ourselves if it's not we don't what God knows about us is that we are spiritual in nature dearly loved and full of self-worth and I've found in my years of being a spiritual healer or Christian Science practitioner as well as healing in the military ministry that the children of God are distinctly different than material personality the children of God are distinctly different than material personality and the more we learn earn about what it means to be a child of God our spiritual God loved nature the more we can detect and correct the flaws of material personality that's what we're going to be talking about today and I'd like to start off with guilt guilt somebody defined it as the gift that keeps on giving guilt especially especially the kind of guilt that lingers just below the surface of thought so that when things go wrong it seems to pop up and tear away at our confidence we can't let guilt linger it does need to be addressed and corrected and removed and not just for mental health but mind and body I want to tell you I tell you about the experience of a friend of mine who was a young Navy Seaman and he was diagnosed by the Navy doctors as having something called tuberculosis of the spine and it was diagnosed as being fatal and so they put him in a full-body cast and gave him discharge papers and in essence sent him home to die now my friend loved God he dearly deeply loved God and he loved the book science and health with key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy she's the discoverer of this spiritual form of healing called Christian Science he loved that book he loved this book because it taught him more about the nature of the god that he loved well when he got home he continued to decline and so a Christian Science practitioner was called and that's somebody who devotes their full time to spiritual healing based upon the teachings in the book science and health it's somebody who takes a very strong stand that the nature of God's child is actually spiritual and that this gives power over human thought and body well my friend told me that when it looked like he was at the point of dying that he said an unusual thing happened he said it surprised him he found himself saying why can't I love my mother now that came from a deep a deep place a place of anguish now those could have been his last words why can't I love my mother well he told me his mother wasn't a bad person just overbearing he said that she had several miscarriages before he came along and he was the youngest and so in raising him she was going to do this right and he said he never got to make any decisions for himself and apparently he resented her for it and grew up feeling guilty about that resentment well when the practitioner heard that she said you don't have to love a personality just love it's nothing out there that turns it on and off like a spigot it's a little bit like the Sun you know the Sun shines because it's the nature of the Sun to shine it doesn't say well I'm going to shine on these roses over here but I'm not going to shine on that crab grass over there it's the nature of the Sun to shine it's the nature of love to love and when he heard that he thought I can do that I can do that and he felt this love that's not brought forth or invoked by personality characteristics it's something in and of itself and he said Rob when that happened the fever and the retching stopped and he said they had cut off part of the body cast because he it was so painful to give him relief so he said I actually got up and I started walking around he said the fear of death was gone he said but the complete healing didn't come about until he understood a little bit about how being spiritual in nature related to a physical disease in a physical body I mean how does that happen and so he continued his study and prayer and talking to Christian Science practitioners and he began to understand that the human mind and the human body were not two different things they were actually different forms of the same stuff a little bit like water in that regard you know water has a hard form that we can see in touch and we call it what ice yeah and water also has a gaseous form that you can't see but you can still feel we call that humidity in the same way he learned that human consciousness actually has a tangible form that you can see in touch and we call it the human body and it has a form human consciousness has a form that you can't see and we call that human belief and as we learn more about our spiritual nature that not only changes human belief and we feel better it actually changes the action of that belief on the human body and healing comes about well when he learned that he had a complete and total healing I've been learning a lot over the years about the healing of guilt from the Bible and more recently I've been pondering the experience of Jesus and the woman caught in the act of adultery if you don't know that story one day Jesus was in the temple teaching and a group of men drugged a woman in and made her stand there in front of everybody and told everybody that she was caught in the act of adultery how humiliating and how dangerous – because in those days it was a capital offense and then they started to taunt Jesus you know Moses in the law said that women like this should be stoned to death but what do you say and they kept it up and finally Jesus said okay he that is without sin among you let him first throw a stone at her whoa that get you to thinking apparently got them to thinking too because one by one they started to leave now Jesus cared about this woman deeply cared about her the stone throwers they didn't care about her they were using her to attack Jesus teachings about the kingdom of God or the kingdom of heaven which was a whole new view of reality a whole new view of our relationship to God a whole new view of how to heal sin and disease in fact I would say that the stone throwers represent what happens when the practice of religion actually gets in the way of God's healing work when people are more interested in arguing over doctrine than they are about saving people's lives well when Jesus saw that the accusers were gone he asked her is there anyone left condemning you and she said no man Lord and he said neither do i condemn you go and sin no more now that's all the story that the Bible has but we know we know that was not the end of the story she had to go home and face all of that and everybody knew everybody knew I don't think anything travels faster than the speed of light except for gossip everybody knew but something was different she had experienced God's saving love and that love would be with her as she went home to face those kinds of issues whatever they were it seems to me that Jesus by his actions were saying people God is better than this we're better than this this woman is better than this I think these kinds of real-life dramas happen every day when people have to confront the wrong that they've done and the suffering that it is caused and sometimes those dramas are very public with lots of angry angry voices but more often than not I found that they go on in the quiet of one's own thinking about themselves thinking about something that they should have done and didn't or something that they shouldn't have done and did and the stone throwing the stone throwing our our own harsh judgments against ourselves it's a it's a form of self condemnation that is brutal and often leads to self-loathing and sometimes destructive behavior and I found that sometimes people indulge in that kind of thing because they think that if I really get angry with myself for what I've done just tear away at myself punish myself for what I've done wrong this somehow or other it's going to make me stop doing what I shouldn't be doing but I haven't seen that that's helped the healing process at all what does help the healing process and what Jesus brought to this woman and he brought to anybody that he ever healed and saved is brought out in the first chapter of the book of John in the Bible when it says to as many as received him to them gave he power power to become children of God born not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man but of God I think Jesus whole life is his teachings his works bring out to humanity throughout all time that the children of God are distinctly different from that which is born in conditioned by the flesh I know it seems to the material senses that years ago we were all conceived by two people and we had no choice in the matter and we were in gendered male or female no choice in the matter and then after you're born into a particular culture the strong impressions of youth tend to shape how we look at life and how we deal in relationships and then by the time you get to be a young adult the world says it's too late this is what you are this is the way you're going to relate these are your strengths these are your weaknesses how unfair how unfair and then when people ask well who made it that way some tell them well God made it that way God made it that way that God created us in a way where we could hardly help the wrongdoing that comes about and then were punished for what we've seen we had no choice in the matter well I found to experience spiritual healing and wholeness we need a better understanding of God and of God's spiritual creation as distinct from that which counterfeits it in other words material personality the writer of first John in the Bible brings out the distinction between that which is born and conditioned by the flesh in other words material personality and that which is born of God and he starts off with this statement from the fleshly point of view if we boast we do not have sin we deceive ourselves if we confess our sins he will forgive us our sins and that's true from a material point of view we do need to know what seems to make our material personalities tick we need to know why we do certain things so that we can correct them but to correct them from the deeper understanding that we're a child of God the writer goes on to say this from the spiritual standpoint in three verse 9 everyone who has been begotten by God does not act sinfully he cannot be a sinner because he has been begotten by God for 7 everyone who loves has been begotten by God 5 5 all that is begotten by God conquers the world and 5:18 no one who has been begotten by God commit sin the one begotten by God is protected the evil one cannot touch him that is the child of God that is who we really are that's the child that God intended and not only intended but is the actual concrete reality here and now the writer goes on to say this have you realized that here and now we are God's children we don't know what we shall become in the future we only know that if reality were to break through if reality were to break through we would reflect his likeness for we should see him as he really is and he goes on to say that as we have this hope in us we purify ourselves even as he our source is pure we only know that if reality were to break through there is unseen to the material senses a concrete spiritual reality instead of a universe poisoned with sin plagued with disease condemned by an angry God there is actually a spiritual universe or innocence is woven into the very fabric of being woven into who we are our relationship to God and our relationship one another innocence what appears to be the material universe is actually the radically distorted view of the human mind it's the way the human mind experiences its own beliefs about substance power cause-and-effect but there are not two universes a material one and a spiritual one there's only one and it's spiritual and what appears to be the material universe is that radically distorted view of the human mind and the Bible tells us that we shouldn't really trust the material senses makes this statement in Romans says because the carnal mind now that means the fleshly mind the human mind material senses personality brain because the carnal mind is enmity against God for it is not subject to the law of God neither indeed can be and in the new American Standard translation because the mind set on the flesh is hostile toward God hostile toward God for it does not subject itself to the law of God for it is not even able to do so well if the human mind the fleshly mind is hostile towards God how in the world can we trust it to give us an accurate view of God's creation and what it means to be a child of God the more we understand about the spiritual reality the more we can confront what appears to be the material flaws of personality and to correct its nature Mary Baker Eddy speaks to this point in her book unity of good she says sooner or later the whole human race will learn that in proportion as the spotless selfhood of God is understood human nature will be renovated in proportion as the spotless self would of God is understood human nature will be renovated and man will receive a higher selfhood derived from God and the redemption of mortals from sin sickness and death will be established on everlasting foundations in proportion as the spotless selfhood of God is understood human nature will be renovated now what this might look like in everyday life I think was brought out by the experience of a friend of mine she was raised in a religious tradition that taught her that God sent disease and accidents to punish us or to teach us lessons and she said for years she tried to make that teaching work in her life so that when things were going bad she tried to believe that this is doing me good but she said there were questions about that and she said one day in Sunday school class she asked her teacher you know if God sends disease and accidents to punish us or to teach us lessons wouldn't Jesus have gotten into trouble by healing people of the effects of accidents and disease hmm she said her teacher told her we don't ask questions like that but the questions persisted until when she became a young adult she had rejected all of those teachings and she thought that she was an agnostic wasn't an atheist she felt like if there was such a thing as God nobody can really understand God but she also found that even though intellectually she had purged herself of all of those beliefs the emotional impressions were still there and whenever her children got sick here came the feelings of guilt feelings that God is punishing me for my sins she said along the way somebody got her the book science and health with key to the scriptures and she began to study and she began to feel hope because she learned instead of God sending accidents and disease God is the very power and presence of divine love with us to help us overcome those ills she said the next time one of her children got sick and it was her youngest he had a high fever and she began to feel guilty she started to turn to that teaching she said there were two Bible passages that she liked in particular one was and God saw all that he had made and behold it was very good and the other one was and without him was not anything made and so she put those two together for herself and came up with God made all and God made it good and he did not make this fever and he's not inflicting it on my child she said as she started to think about those things her guilt started to go down and when the guilt was gone in just a few moments the child was healed and not only that she said he had been suffering from ear infections had several bouts the year before they all stopped when she was reading that book she said her oldest son who had four or five bouts of throat infection that all stopped and she said for herself she had grown up ever since she was a little girl having allergies and that stopped she had been medically diagnosed as asthmatic and that stopped she said she learned a lot by reading that book and applying its teachings and experienced healing one of the things that she learned she said was I wasn't an agnostic just because I didn't believe somebody else's teaching about God and she said the human disposition that whenever things go bad to try to figure out why is God doing this to me has more to do with the rationalization of the human mind it's not divine revelation this woman and the experience of that young man I told you about before that had tuberculosis of the spine they both gained something of what it means to be the children of God spiritual in nature dearly loved full of self-worth safe in God's care they learned that this spiritual reality is intact our spiritual identity as God's beloved child is intact and is unstained and unconditioned by negative material history this invincible truth of spiritual identity is the Christ the healing Christ so wonderfully brought to humanity in the life of Christ Jesus but always here to heal and to save and what that healing Christ does is it destroys lies about God and lies about what it means to be the child of God and gives us power and dominion over that which is born and conditioned by the flesh so when it comes to lingering guilt when it comes to lingering guilt if we have learned from the experience saw what was done wrong changed our life it's time to let go of the guilt it does not serve a good purpose if it did we would have guilt support groups guilt testimony meetings at church it does not help it's time to let it go the debt has been paid if it's difficult to let go then maybe we ought to start shifting our thinking about ourselves from a materially conditioned human personality and start thinking more of ourselves as the child of God and as I mentioned before from first John perhaps we ought to affirm more that I am the child of God and I concur what the world says about me that as a child of God I am protected the evil one cannot touch me to think more in terms of who we are as the spiritual image and likeness of God if anybody knew or had a reason for feeling guilt it would have been Paul in the New Testament before his name was changed to Paul he was Saul Saul of Tarsus Saul was a stalker of Christians he would find them and cause despicable things to happen but then he became a follower of Jesus he makes this interesting statement even in light of all that he had done and all the reasons that he should have for being guilt-stricken he said in second Corinthians 5:17 If any man be in Christ he is a new creature a new creature old things are passed away behold all things are become new and the JB Phillips translation puts it this way if a man is in Christ he becomes a new person altogether the pass is finished and gone everything has become fresh and new so important to identify oneself as the spiritual image and likeness of God and that whatever has appeared to have happened in the past those impressions never made the slightest impression on our source God spirit and have no legitimate place in God's image and likeness and an understanding of that gives us power and dominion over those impressions and the ability to have them disappear in our lives we need to let go of lingering guilt but if you're having a hard time letting go of guilt I don't want to make you feel guilty for feeling guilty so I have some good news I have some good news and that's this that God's power to heal is more powerful is more powerful than our inability to let go that God's ability to heal is more powerful than what appears to be our inability to let go I think sometimes people don't feel good about themselves because they don't feel loved and they don't feel loved because they don't feel like they have earned God's love but we don't earn God's love it's grace we have it already and so actually instead of feeling unloved because I haven't earned God's love and done the good things in my life that I should have been doing just the opposite is true if we accept God's love bask in this love you'll find yourself starting to more and more do those good things in your life sometimes there's a challenge with memories and I want to talk about those memories a little bit when we start to get serious about identifying ourselves as the spiritual image and likeness of God and are working to live out from that standpoint every day don't be surprised if certain memories negative memories start to come up in consciousness it's not necessarily a bad thing the reason is because the Christ this spiritual reality of who we are is God's image and likeness that same Christ that destroys lies about God and lies about who we are works deep it works deep and it gets at sometimes those problems either behavior problems or sometimes physical problems that are actually linked and anchored to past negative memories and it actually brings those up to the surface sometimes to wash them away and everything that's attached to them is washed away – it's a little bit like if you were in a kayak and you were paddling along over to a buoy out on the water and it looks like that buoy is just there floating on the water and then you might paddle over and say well I'm going to lift that up put it in the kayak and it doesn't give why doesn't it give it's chained to an anchor beneath the surface but if the anchor is removed everything attached to it goes with it in the same way the Christ works and gets at those negative impressions of the past that may be holding on to behavior problems or physical problems it gets at them it removes them and it removes everything attached to them that was the experience of a friend of mine another friend she told me that at a particular point in her life that she saw five negative character traits that just had to go she wanted to be free from them they were getting in the way of progress in her life she would only tell me what one or two were the others were too embarrassing she said one was procrastination extreme procrastination another one daydreaming all the time five of them and she said that she had worked diligently to improve worked hard prayed hard to be healed of those negative character traits and she said after years and years she sort of took stock of where she was and she said now there was some improvement but they were still there and she was so discouraged she said though instead of backing off she resolved more than ever before to identify herself the spiritual image and likeness of God and she said not long after that an unusual thing happened one morning when she awakened instead of the normal inspiration that would come to her and support her for the rest of the day instead of that there was a whole parade of her girlhood memories one after another after another she said she had so much to do that day but she wondered if maybe her praying was bringing something to the surface for healing and so she let these memories come with the stipulation that if the memory Illustrated something about God's love she would identify with that memory but if it did not illustrate something of God's love she would reject it and no longer identify herself with that memory she said this wasn't some sort of self analysis she said what she felt she was doing was taking a strong stand that the only legitimate influence in her life comes from God she said after that process was over she noticed that from then on all five character traits were gone gone those things that seemed to be so resistant and so much a part of her character were just gone she said she's not quite sure just what happened except that she felt by depriving it of a past she was also depriving it of a present now as I have shared that idea with people over the last several months I know some folks have said well you know if you have a lot of good in your life I could see that of negative memories come up and you reject them and no longer identify with them but what if your past is mostly negative and if you reject all that stuff you don't have any stuff left you don't even know who you are so if that's the situation I would say this that sometimes it's important not just to detect and reject and no longer identify with negative memories but sometimes it's important to to replace them with something you know to be positive about God because no matter what the memory is whenever it took place you know God was there God was there and if God was there then whatever was important to us or to others in that event was safe in God's care and no matter what happened it could not destroy what is in God's care in those kinds of ways we can not only reject and no longer identify with negative memories but we can also replace them with something positive well what if as another friend said what if they just keep coming over and over again I detest it I detest I detested what I did but no matter what I do the memory keeps coming keeps coming it makes me feel so bad what about that will persist but one of the things that's helped me over the years is a parable by Jesus when he said not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man but that which cometh out of the mouth he said it at a time when his disciples were being criticized for eating with unwashed hands and Jesus said it's not that which goes into the mouth that defiles but that which comes out of the heart where evil motives and acts come from that defiles a man well I got to thinking it's not so much those memories that pop up in our thinking that defile but only those memories that come up in our thinking that we identify with and act according to so no matter how much a memory comes up that's negative it's not from God there's no God behind it and it's not going to find any believer in us and just relax and let it pass away don't feel bad just because it seems to come up over and over again but I do know that sometimes certain memories seem to be too painful to deal with sometimes it seems that some memories are too painful to deal with and it may be that we tend to ignore them or to keep them out of consciousness but even though we ignore them they're still there they still affect how we think how we relate to others I know there is a great deal of concern right now with so many of our troops coming back from the Middle East having been exposed to terrible terrible battlefield scenes and the concern by health care professionals is they may be bringing back a whole lot of unresolved mental conflicts or our first responders are firemen and policemen working tirelessly at some disaster site have been exposed to sights and sounds that are difficult to deal with but you know it's right to have dominion over our memories and not have our memories have dominion over our lives what do we do in a case like that well I stay really close to Jesus on this Jesus explored the full realm and range of human sorrow to show us the way of healing and I think that's particularly evident in the crucifixion but to me Jesus crucifixion shows that there's always a resurrection when the most shocking things happen to good an innocence when goodness and innocent seemed to be totally defeated by evil a crucifying scene that's not the last word there's always a resurrection it was the resurrection that took away the grief in the sorrow and the pain of Jesus disciples the book science and health as a spiritual interpretation of resurrection it says spiritualization of thought a new and higher idea of immortality or spiritual existence material belief yielding to spiritual understanding a new and higher idea of spiritual existence that causes material belief to yield to spiritual understanding resurrection I think this process was brought out by two of Jesus disciples after they had witnessed in Jerusalem the crucifixion they were on their way to a little village called Emmaus and I can only imagine the kinds of feelings that they had when everything that they had trusted seemed to have been totally annihilated well they weren't alone the resurrected Jesus appeared and was walking with them but their thought was in such a state of darkness that they didn't recognize him but Jesus patiently persisted through the Scriptures to penetrate their darkened thought until they could see that good was not destroyed by evil and their sense of good was put on a rock-solid basis of spiritual reality I think that anybody that has gone through a crucifying experience whatever that may mean figuratively speaking is in a walk to Emmaus anybody that has gone through a crucifying experience figuratively speaking is in their own walk to Emmaus they're not alone the Christ is with them spiritual reality God loved reality is with them and patiently persists in penetrating human thought until we can see that good is not destroyed now somebody may say well listen from all of the evil I have seen going on in the world I don't even think there is a God and so I'm not looking for any spiritual answers I'm not on a search or a walk to Emmaus I don't think there are any answers to the evil in the world but that misses the whole point this action doesn't come from the human condition it comes from outside and above the human condition because the point is evil is an affront to spiritual reality and the nature of spiritual reality destroys it evil cannot sustain itself in the face of God's love sometimes I found though that it requires forgiveness that was a case with an acquaintance of mine who was raised in war-torn Germany in World War two he was 10 years old and he was forced to go to one of Hitler's youth camps and when he heard that his father who was a Christian Science practitioner was put into jail because of his practice of spiritual healing then he refused to go anymore and then they put him into a forced labor camp ten years old and one of his duties was to bury the people they brought in for execution now that would be terrible for any adult but for a ten-year-old boy he said he survived the war and his father survived the war and he said one day he saw his father being friendly with one of the neighbors who had been active in the Nazi Party and he became indignant how can you do that how can you do that and his father told him I believe that everybody involved in those atrocities should be brought to justice but that still does not relieve me of the need to forgive well the young man grew to adulthood and remarkably in a lot of ways free from the effects of that war but there were still nightmares fantasies on what he would do if he ever caught the commandant of that labor force camp and of course there were the still the scars on his back from a brutal beating but he decided that it was time to be free from the effects of that war in his spiritual maturity he zeroed in on two things one thing was that he needed to see that these thoughts and feelings did not come from God his source they did not come from God what God was sending him as a pure river of love the other thing was that he needed to forgive he felt how can I ever hope to be free from the effects of that war and I'm still resenting the people that took part in it he said as he started to work in that direction he got results and he was able to forgive and he said not only did the nightmare is stopped and the fantasies stopped but even the scars on his back disappeared forgiveness I think it's obvious these two books that I've been quoting from by Mary Baker Eddy I think it's obvious that this is not a woman unacquainted with grief and sorrow in fact I was reading a letter one day that she sent to a friend while she was writing her autobiography and she said to the friend I was putting down historical event after historical event in my life as we have in autobiographies and she said suddenly I broke down I broke down I couldn't go any further she had to stop writing and through a lot of prayer she was able to regain and she continued on and finished the book it's called retrospection and introspection retrospection looking back introspection looking in the first part of the book is historical event after historical event until this particular point when it's no longer her history but her history with the discovery of Christian Science a clear turning point and at that point she summarized everything before her discovery of Christian Science in this way the trend of human life was too eventful to leave me undisturbed in the illusion that this so-called life could be a real and an abiding rest before before the spiritual turning point she added the world was a dark dark and then she picks up with what might be called her resurrection experience when she was suffering from a dire malady and in a moment of intense spiritual inspiration she glimpsed that reality was spiritual and that she and everyone else were actually spiritual children of God as perfect and safe as God was it not only healed her of that malady but she went on to discover how she could continue that healing work and teach others how to heal and then she makes this amazing statement she says the human history needs to be revised and the material record expunged the human history needs to be revised and the material record expunged is it possible to revise one's human history I used to think how in the world can you revise what's over and done with were stuck with the consequences until one day I realized that essentially the only effect of the past is what I believe about it in the present and I could change my beliefs and remove the effects is it possible to do that well my friend had tuberculosis of the spine resented his mother he was able to revise his human history and expunge the material record the woman who was raised to believe that God was hostile towards her she revised her human history the friend that had those five negative character traits she definitely revised her human history and my my acquaintance in world war ii he revised his human history the human history can be revised and the material record can be expunged you know at the beginning of the lecture I likened our relationship to God as a ray of light shining out from its source and that even if somebody came along and tried to hit the ray of light with a baseball bat with scissors stain it with ink trap it in a box it wouldn't affect the ray of light because it's defined by its source not by its material surroundings not by its material past in the same way you and I are defined by our source God spirit and no matter how much it seems humanly speaking we've been battered wounded or are thinking about ourselves or others has been stained or even if our lives seem to be trapped in a negative personality box none of those events have ever made the slightest impression on our source God the divine mind and because of that they have no legitimate place in God's image and likeness which is who we really are I want to close with a couple of statements from Jesus peace I leave with you my peace I give unto you not as the world giveth give I unto you let not your heart be troubled neither let it be afraid and then he added in the world ye shall have tribulation but be of good cheer I have overcome the world this peace that comes from outside and above the human condition always overcomes the world it always overcomes what the world says about you and me it overcomes what the world says about our past and it brings to light that we are spiritual in nature the children of God dearly loved and full of self-worth amen thank you very much for coming

A very clear explanation of the true nature of man’s relationship with God and how every improvement in one’s understanding of it results in healing and restored harmony. It explains beautifully how to overcome guilt based on writings from I John in the Bible and the example of the transformation of Saul of Tarsus to St. Paul (II Corinthians 5:17). Thank you so much for this enlightening talk!

One of the clearest explications of Christian Science theology I've seen.  His choice of Bible passages illustrate very effectively why Christian Scientists interpret Jesus' teachings in the way that they do.  Gilbert's style is so earnest and free from pretense.

I have difficulty knowing or equating God's sacrifice for my abuse, for my lack, my inability to maintain a relationship, or even have someone who wants me. I know I accept Jesus and I am God's child, but how can God's sacrifice help me in these areas? It is confusing and all I know is that his sacrifice is only for our sins and bad things that come from the sin we inflicted on others and ourselves.

I also love this lecture. So clear, so simple, so practical. It reduces what may seem like difficult issues to deal with, into simple terms which can be easily achieved. I think we often limit our own ability to heal discordant situations by subconsciously believing we are not good enough ( guilt factor) or not advanced enough or not spiritual enough to succeed. This talk shows us that healing is indeed possible in all circumstances by going back to simple basics regarding the true relationship between GOD and man.

I love this lecture! Thank you so very much! I wondered which Bible he used, it looked like it had different translations within it… that would be so interesting to research .

I listen to this lecture over and over again and every time get something new from it. Rob Gilbert explains, with such simplicity, who we truly are. And, how applying that knowledge destroys the seeming impressions or consequences of guilt, evil, etc. a lot of aha moments and revelations. Thank you Rob Gilbert.
