Met Gala Triggers Christians

IF YOU WANT TO OFFEND DEVOUT MUSLIMS, DRAW PHOTOS OF
MOHAMMED. IF YOU WANT TO OFFEND CHRISTIANS IN AMERICA, HAVE A
THEME TO MET GALA THAT CENTERS AROUND CATHOLICISM. BREE
PAYTON, WHO WRITES FOR THE FEDERALIST HAD A LITTLE BIT OF A
TIZZY ABOUT THE MET GALA BECAUSE IT WAS RELIGIOUSLY THEMED. IN
FACT, THE THEME WAS: LOOK, I AM NOT UPSET ABOUT WHAT
SHE WROTE. I’M AMUSED BY IT, ESPECIALLY THE FORMAT IN WHICH
SHE WROTE THIS PIECE BECAUSE SHE LISTS ALL OF THE OFFENDERS AND
THEN SHE EXPLAINS WHY WHAT THERE IS WEARING IS OFFENSIVE. I’M
GOING TO GIVE YOU A FEW EXAMPLES. FIRST THERE IS
RIHANNA. SHE WRITES: LET’S LOOK AT A PICTURE OF THE
SEXY VERSION OF THE POPE. THAT IS A SEXIER VERSION
OF THE CURRENT POPE. HE’S NOT QUITE THAT SEXY. HERE’S WHAT PEYTON WRITES
ABOUT WHY THIS IS OFFENSIVE. SHE SAYS: LOOK, I AM NOT RELIGIOUS. I WAS OFFENDED BY THE MET FOR
OTHER REASONS WHICH WE WILL GET INTO AND A SECOND BUT I GET
IT, YOU DON’T HAVE TO GIVE US A CATHOLIC HISTORY, WE ALL
KNOW IN THE POPE IS AHEAD OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH. OH REALLY? SO BASICALLY, SHE DOES NOT LIKE
THEM USING ART TO DEPICT CATHOLICS IN A DIFFERENT LIGHT. THEY HAVE BEEN USING ART IN RELIGION FOR CENTURIES
UPON CENTURIES. HAVE YOU EVER GONE TO A MUSEUM? BUT THAT ART HAS MINIMIZED
RELIGION TO PAINTINGS. NOW WHEN I THINK OF CATHOLICISM,
I THINK OF PAINTINGS. YOU KNOW WHAT I WANT TO KNOW? SUPER RELIGIOUS PEOPLE, WHICH
I WAS RAISED BY SUPER RELIGIOUS PEOPLE, WHY ARE YOU
KEEPING UP WITH THE MET GALA? WHY ARE YOU RESEARCHING WHAT
RIHANNA WORE? IT WOULDN’T EVEN BE ON MY RADAR
BECAUSE I WASN’T ALLOWED TO BE LIKE THIS, BUT WHAT I THOUGHT
WAS FUNNY WAS I LOVE TO HEAR PEOPLE BE SO OUTRAGED WHEN YOU
DISRESPECT THE CATHOLIC CHURCH. I WANT TO READ AN ARTICLE THAT
SHE WROTE ABOUT TRYING TO GET SOME OF THOSE PRIESTS WHO
MOLESTED CHILDREN BEHIND BARS AND I WANT TO SEE THE TYPE OF
OUTRAGE BEHIND THAT. [BUFFERING] AND THEN THERE IS LANA DEL REY. HERE IS WHAT PEYTON HAD TO SAY ABOUT WHY THIS IS OFFENSIVE. THERE IS SEXUAL ARTWORK OF THIS
BUT THE PROBLEM IS SOMEONE IN YOUR CONTEMPORARY IS WEARING AN
OUTFIT LIKE THAT OR IS JUST KEEPING TRADITION ALIVE. THEY WANT THING ALSO THINGS
OSSIFIED INTO A VERY NARROW AND LITERAL UNDERSTANDING OF THE
TIME FRAME. THIS IS WHAT IS IT IS REALLY
ABOUT. THERE IS A LOT OF DISDAIN FOR PEOPLE IN HOLLYWOOD
BECAUSE THEY IDENTIFY AS LIBERAL. THEY HAVE THIS THEMED
MET GALA. I DON’T THINK THAT THEY DID THIS WITH THE INTENTION
OF INSULTING ANYONE AND THIS IS A FORM OF ARTS, REGARDLESS OF
WHAT YOU FEEL OR THINK ABOUT FASHION, THIS IS A FORM OF ARTS,
EXPRESSION. I DON’T THINK ANYONE HAD THE INTENTION OF
CRITICIZING RELIGION OR MAKING A MOCKERY OUT OF IT AND LOOK, THE
POINT THAT I WANT TO QUICKLY MAKE IS I THINK IT IS RIDICULOUS
THAT DEVOUT MUSLIMS GET AS OFFENDED AS THEY DO WHEN THEIR
DEPICTIONS OF THE PROPHET MOHAMMED. OF COURSE THERE HAVE
BEEN CASES OF PEOPLE TAKING THINGS TOO FAR WHEN THEY’VE
GOTTEN OFFENDED BUT YOU CAN’T CRITICIZE THE CULTURAL ISSUES
THERE WHEN YOU YOURSELF GET OFFENDED BY SOMETHING LIKE THIS. BY THE WAY, WHEN I AM INCREDIBLY SECURE ABOUT SOMETHING,
SOMEONE’S CRITICISM, EVEN IF SOMEONE OUTRIGHT
CRITICIZES THAT PART OF ME, IT DOESN’T GET UNDER MY SKIN
BECAUSE I’M CONFIDENT IN IT. FOR INSTANCE, WHEN PEOPLE SAY
THINGS LIKE YOU ARE DOWN. OKAY, YOU THINK I AM DUMB. I KNOW I’M
NOT SO I’M NOT GOING TO GET OFFENDED BY THIS KIND OF
COMMENTS BUT WHEN IT COMES TO RELIGION FOR SOME REASON PEOPLE
DON’T TO BE VERY SECURE IN THEIR OWN FATE. I KNOW WHY AND YOU KNOW WHY. THEY DON’T ACTUALLY BELIEVE IT. FOR EXAMPLE, I AM IGNACIO. I
DON’T BELIEVE IN ANY OF THE RELIGIONS SO IF YOU WORE AN
OUTFIT THAT DISAGREED WITH ME, I WOULD LAUGH AND LAUGH. I DON’T
GIVE A CARE WHAT YOU ARE WEARING. WHY WOULD THAT HAVE
ANYTHING TO DO WITH MY BELIEFS. MY BELIEFS ARE BASED ON LOGIC
AND REASON. THEY ARE TOTALLY DETACHED FROM THE FASHION OF THE
DAY. WHAT A PREPOSTEROUS THING TO THINK. THAT IS BECAUSE YOU
DON’T ACTUALLY BELIEVE IT AND YOU ARE A SPECIAL LITTLE
SNOWFLAKE WHO WANTS TO BE A VICTIM BECAUSE IN FACT YOUR
RELIGION IS CENTERED AROUND THIS VICTIM KNOWLEDGE HE. THEY
SUFFERED, LADY OF SORROWS AND WE WERE SAVED BY YOUR BLOOD. WHAT
A WEIRD IDEA. IF YOU ARE NOT BRAINWASHED INTO RELIGION, IT
SOUNDS INSANE. SHE SUFFERED AND HER SON WAS DRENCHED IN BLOOD
AND THAT WAS GREAT FOR THE REST OF US BECAUSE WE WERE SAVED BY
A. WHAT? YOU WERE AN OUTFIT THAT I DIDN’T
LIKE SO THAT AFFECTS MY RELIGION. ALSO ALL OF IT SOUNDS
CUCKOO FOR COCOA PUFFS BUT NOW I’M GOING TO SHOCK THE WORLD. I
THINK THEY MAKE ONE GOOD POINT. AND I KNOW WHY, SHE SAID, AS
THEY HAD SAID IF THEY HAD SIMILAR OUTFITS ABOUT ISLAM OR
JUDAISM IT WOULDN’T FLY AND THAT IS TRUE. IF THEY WENT IN AND JUST OF HIS
ORTHODOX JEWS PEOPLE WOULD BE LIKE WHAT ARE YOU DOING? NOW THE REASON WHY THEY WOULDN’T
IS BECAUSE CHRISTIANITY IS THE DOMINANT RELIGION IN AMERICA AND
THEY HAVE POWER WHEREAS THE OTHER RELIGIONS DON’T AND THEY
ARE MINORITIES SO HISTORICALLY THEY HAVE BEEN PICKED ON CEDAR
ONCE PICK ON THEM AND IT IS EASIER AND MAKES MORE SENSE TO
FOCUS ON THE DOMINANT RELIGION BUT STILL, THAT IS A
FAIR POINT. I WOULD DISAGREE WITH THAT. I WOULD SAY THAT THAT WAS THE CHARGE SHE WAS USING AND I’VE SO
MANY INSTANCES OF THE WAYS THAT EITHER WHITE WOMEN HAVE
APPROPRIATED WEARING THAT HEADSCARVES FOR WHATEVER
POLITICAL REASON BUT YEAH, I WOULD PUSH BACK ON THAT POINT
A LITTLE BIT.

The catholic religious paintings were controversial at the time (renaissance). That’s where we get the art to be censored. So it’s normal for this to be controversial.

Granted it “shouldn’t” be on my radar but usually when people make light of my savior and his sacrifice it offends me. I couldn’t care less that these freaks parade around making fools of themselves because the lord will never be mocked regardless of what humans do. The problem i have is that this isn’t the first time something like this has happened and it won’t be the last. The children look up to these blasphemous stars and since its called art, they go right along with it and lose their standing in the faith. “Christianity is the most powerful religion” “other groups have been picked on” give me a break. If you still believe Christianity is at the forefront of this society then you haven’t looked outside in a very long time. Christian views are soon going to be written off as hate speech. Wake up. The world hated christ and the world hates those who truly follow him. Peace and love to all because he is returning soon. And on that day the veil will be lifted before your very eyes

Christianity has been spoiled rotten. They feel entitled to be offended. They expect everyone to respect their “belief” and for the most part they have been humoured. They aren’t insecure…. they are over entitled to feel offended. And they will get over it.

"The Costume Institute's spring 2018 exhibition—at The Met Fifth Avenue and The Met Cloisters—will feature a dialogue between fashion and religious artworks from the The Met collection to examine the relationship between creativity and the religious imagination.
Serving as the cornerstone of the exhibition, papal robes and accessories from the Sistine Chapel sacristy, many of which have never been seen outside The Vatican, will be on view in the Anna Wintour Costume Center. Fashions from the early 20th century to the present will be shown in The Met's Medieval and Byzantine galleries and at The Met Cloisters alongside religious artworks, to provide an interpretative context for fashion's engagement with Catholicism."

When that high school girl wore a Chinese dress to her prom people freaked out about it. Crying, how dare she, she's disrespecting someone else's culture. And most people on the left condemned her. But here, and entire group of people are playing dress-up in Catholic clothes, in what some may say is disrespectful, and this is okay?

I would just like some consistency here. Me personally, didn't take issue with either.

Once we start making fun of people for any religion, it is problematic. We don’t have a right to tell someone what they shouldn’t be offended with. I wasn’t offended by the met gala theme but I am not going to mock the people that were because I understand that religion is something many people take seriously.

Fair points, except one. This definitely wasn't meant to be neutral or supportive of Christianity. Saying that they didn't mean to mock or make light of Christianity with this theme is disingenuous. Lana Del Ray was trying to shock and make a negative statement about Christianity with that outfit. Now, if you're not Christian that might be totally fine with you. And it's also fair to point out that getting upset is why this sort of thing works for shock value and ignoring it would be a better way to make it go away. But it's still absurd to say that this theme wasn't meant to mock Christianity.

Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York lent his Bishops mitre to Katy Perry for her costume, and he gave the opening speech at the gala. Father James Martin also spoke and the Sistine Chapel gave their first performance in the U.S. at the gala. Many priests were present, and the was an atmosphere of respect and goodwill between them, the Met staff, and the partygoers, much like the respect and goodwill you have shown here. But I'm sure you must have read of these things in researching your story.

People aren't triggered by fact that they are wearing clothes, they are upset at the fact that they are wearing costumes that are actually rooted in pagan (Babylonian) imagery and portraying it as christian. The catholic church is the root of this pagan worship so its non-sensical for you to say that because the church gave them permission its okay. i also disagree with Cenk saying that judaism is a minority religion and has no power. What rock are you living under?

Religious people call millennials snowflakes but get offended by Happy Holidays and people seeing their traditions as art (even as a very dominant American religion like catholicism). I was raised by very liberal Catholics and went to Catholic school but am now agnostic. I think this one lady is really over doing the religious reasons. But what I feel is most Catholics offense is that Catholics were persecuted by American Protestants for longer than not. Maryland use to be the only state it was legal in and when the Irish Catholics came over they were heavily persecuted. Even myself as someone raised in the Church have experienced judgment and ridiculed for some of the beliefs and religious traditions. I don't think that non Catholics really understand these everyday kind of microaggressions are. The Gala doesn't matter to me but I know some of my friends were disappointed by the theme and the lack of understanding the traditions she holds dear and are sacred in her eyes. Christianity may be the majority but Catholicism is not, and is fundamentally different than Protestant or non denominational Christians. (that's the whole point of the Reformation…)

Catholics in the US are way better people than the conservative evangelical hypocrites.

(I'm Christian) I think the met gala was fabulous, they really outdid themselves. I think that they actually made Christianity/ Catholicism into a beautiful fashion choice.

Why should they be? The Catholic Church and Christians are pagan anyway.

There was absolutely nothing of any real substance that got to the point in this it was all just a bunch of beating around the bush even possibly a very detailed description of the bush to a friend afterwards but again nothing worth hearing

So dressing as a sexy Muslim or wearing a native American outfit is wrong, yet somehow this is okay. I'm not even religious yet it seems hypocritical when they often argue about cultural appropriation on this show. Guess it isn't when it's white people

Sometimes I feel TYT lumps every person of faith as "crazy religious" associate religion with ultra conservatives. What if I'm a liberal and religious? Why am I being lumped together with fundamentalists when in actuality I and many other liberal Christians don't really care about the MET gala but can appreciate the art and beauty in the clothing designs? Why are we being lumped together with hardcore fundamentalists. For a group of people who talk about nuance in immigrants, feminism, and people of color situations, why can't you determine the nuance in religions?

The newspaper "Catholic New York" has a favorable opinion of this exhibit. This does necessarily depict mainstream Catholic views. In response to the criticism that it is not right to wear a costume of a holy person, there are Catholics that do this from time to time. Nevertheless this news report was interesting.

It was distastefully done and repulsive. As a Roman Catholic, it sickens me our faith or Christianity in general is so easily mocked. If your going to wear outfits of a certain faith, do your homework, or even better, be an actual Catholic or Christian.
