How to Resist Temptation & Spiritual Warfare! (As a Catholic)

hey guys it's Lizzy so this is one of the most common video requests I've gotten on my videos ever and it's something that I felt like I couldn't talk about because I genuinely didn't understand what people meant by temptation but this lent I was praying and asking God to help me understand this because one of the first Sunday's of length the scripture meeting was about Jesus being tempted in the desert for forty days and I remember doing the Bible study with my boyfriend and it was one of those Bible studies that has questions asking we were just doing questions from the Living liturgy book which I super recommend if you have a parish Bible study use this book it's always asking what are the most common temptations you deal with and I was like I literally don't deal with temptations I don't understand what it is and so then I prayed to understand it and literally the next week every single day I had a temptation so strong and I was like what is this but I thought it was really cool because since I went into it wanting to experience it I had this very fighting mentality and so number one that's my best advice is to change your perspective of it one of the most intense Bible verses is in first Peter and it describes Satan as a roaring lion going around trying to find someone to devour and I think a lot of times we forget that there are legit spiritual forces at work trying to tear us away from God Francesc on this amazing Protestant pastor he wrote this book crazy love that I read in high school super influenced me and he had this metaphor that I think about all the time of an escalator going down and you have to go up the escalator to get to God so you're constantly being pulled down by different forces helping you manipulating you to get caught up to trust things that distract you from Christ that are against God you constantly have this force coming down and you have to run up and keep stepping up to get closer to God and so a lot of times we're not even aware that there's this escalator effect pulling us down and so that's my number one thing wake up realize there are spiritual forces at work this is a battle so I am so excited about the sponsor for today's video these st. Paul centers Scott Hahn runs the st. Paul Center so I was so excited that they know who I am Genesis to Jesus is an online Bible study series for the Old Testament in Ephesians 6 when see Paul is talking about the armor of God it refers to scripture as a sword so when it comes to assessing your heart and actions regarding temptation it is so important to be immersed in Scripture a lot of you who talk to me don't know how to go about reading the Bible so there are 12 different 30 minute videos on parts of the Old Testament it is kind of lecture type videos but it's also like the bishop bear and Catholicism series style where there's tons of beautiful b-roll throughout the videos a lot of it filmed in the Holy Land so you're actually seeing the places where all of this took place Scott Hahn is actually in the videos he reads all of the Bible verses it'd be really cool to do with your family to do it as a couples activity in your relationship or even you could do it as a 12-week series as your parish Bible study and do the 30 minute video and the discussion afterwards I negotiated a 20% off code for you guys so you can get the DVD series for $90 you can also buy the streaming so permanently on the videos permanently log in and have access to the videos to rent the streaming for 1995 which will be $15 with a 20% off code I've been a link below and you guys can make an account and then decide which one you want to buy let's get back into the video so I want to start this video by defining what the Catholic Church means by sin because I think there are huge misconceptions in our culture of what sin even is st. Augustine defines sin as not existing it's not an actual tangible force but it's just a degradation a lessening a lack of good does that make sense so sin evil is not a tangible actual force at war with God it's not like a dualism happening in the universe where good and evil have the same amount of power and are kind of fighting together that's not what we're dealing with also sin is brokenness when we say lord have mercy lord have mercy Christ have mercy at mass the Greek word for mercy is the same prefix as the word for Olive Oyl which was used as a medicinal purpose for healing and treating wounds so sin is not God being so angry at humanity but it's God being so concerned about our spiritual health and wanting us to flourish and be happy and feel peaceful and so sin is taking our humanity taking our flourishing and going a step down becoming less alive hurting ourselves hurting other people 1st Peter chapter 5 starting in verse 6 humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you casting all your anxieties on him because he cares for you your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour resistant firm in the faith knowing that the same sufferings are being experienced by your brothers and sisters throughout the world after you have suffered a little while the God of all Grace who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ well himself restore confirm strengthen and establish you which is so beautiful because that's exactly what happened to Jesus after the 40 days in the desert where the Angels came and took care of him and so it's the same for us except for God comes and takes care of and ministered to us if you go up to chapter 4 it's saying a similar thing beloved do not be surprised at the fiery child when it comes upon you to test you as though something strange were happening to you but rejoiced insofar as you share Christ's suffering that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed so this in particular is talking about persecutions happening in the church so Peter is writing to them to strengthen to encourage that you not deny Christ when they're about to be murdered so that's the context that this is in but similar temptations happen to all of us on a smaller scale and in the same way that the martyrs were there to be a testimony to the world of how strong they believed in God it's the same in our lives where when we resist temptation and continue to trust in God and live for God that is a testimony to everyone around us of how much we trust in God the homily today at my parish our priest was saying that when you feel tempted just start saying the Nicene Creed and it seems like such an intense big that when you're dealing with the thought just say the entire created your mind wherever you are but he was talking about hope in the Old Testament when Moses is going up on cyanide to get the law he's gone for such short amount of time and when he comes down they're worshiping the golden calf they broke the first commandment to not have any gods before God the Almighty but we deal with idols in other areas of our life it's not just we're worshiping a piece of wood but we put trust we put reliance we put comfort in things that are not God and the entire purpose of Lent is to get rid of these things that comfort us so we can fully solely rely and focus on God another Bible verse that I really really love and I encourage all of you to memorize this Bible verse and if you don't want to say the Creed what did you do with the thought you could instead to say this Bible verse but I actually memorized it when I was 9 and I would say it in my head if I needed it so it's 1st Corinthians 10:13 no temptation has seized you except what is common to me and God is faithful he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear but when you are tempted he will always provide a way out so you can stand up under it so that should be really really encouraging that it's normal that what we're dealing with everyone else has experienced including Jesus when he was on earth and God is promising that every single time you do have the strength to stand up against it and fight against it identifying stuff like this as spiritual warfare not just random thoughts really wakes you up and helps you to confront what's going on this is so intense but I will literally do now Satan and he'll be like go we see it oh wow I've never talked about this before and also I immediately pray to God for strength and I pray to Mary and my patron saint and Paul and different apostles people so the moment it happens did not Satan pray for intervention something else that's super been helping me and completely changed my life literally every day the way I deal with thoughts and experiences so last weekend I went to a youth 2000 retreat in Ireland and apparently they have you 2,000 in a mare I can too but I never heard of it so it was the most amazing weekend I realized so many things about myself we had this whole confession reconciliation healing night and one of the priests who is speaking about confession was saying so many of us have fear and we're scared to go to confession you don't want to be open with God about it and I know for me every single time I want to go to confession I think oh I can just go next week like literally every single time there's this voice telling me to just procrastinate about confession and the priest was saying that is not God's voice so if you feel scared if you feel like procrastinating on going that is not God's voice and so I've started applying that to every single situation like if I'm with someone and I kind of just want to impromptu you pray with the two of us but I'm kind of scared of the vulnerable or I want to say something encouraging affirming to someone but I'm scared more I want to gossip with other people say negative things to bond with friends every single time you have an intuition you have a thought ask yourself is that God's voice isn't that so empowering and so day to day just the tiniest most nitpicky experiences I forced myself to categorize it is it God or is it the devil prowling around like a roaring lion that's how black and white my brain is so that is what completely changed my life but something else that a brother who I was talking to what's explaining to me is the difference between a thought and what is a sin in Matthew 5 on the Sermon on the Mount when Jesus is being the new Moses and setting down the law it takes sin and intention a step further you have heard it said you shall not commit adultery but I say to you everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart if your right eye causes you to sin tear it out and throw it away for it is better than you one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell and if your right hand causes you to sin cut it up and throw it away for it's better than you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell it's so intense about sin and really really important distinction do not forget this so a lot of people have taken this verse and said that if a guy looks at a girl and is turned on that is lust but not at all what Jesus is talking about is intentional fantasizing in your mind if a man looks at how a woman is dressed and it's turned if a woman looks at how a man is dressed and is turned on if you're on your computer and there's a pornographic like advertisement when you feel turns on that is not sinful at all and people who have used that as a modesty argument have a complete misunderstanding of the Greek used here for lust but the whole point is that if you're planning and analyzing and imagining what something would feel like that is simple so a lot of guys messaged me for advice regarding a porn addiction how to deal with that I asked on my facebook any advice from guys who deal with that that I can share with my subscribers and there are two different internet plugins that you can download and pay for but if you do have a porn addiction if it's really ruining your life tearing you away from God I mean even if you don't feel that it's ruining your life it's still mortal sin Catholicism so probably this would be a good idea it adds accountability to your web browser and links you to someone else in the application so yeah if you're dealing with that specifically obviously it's a drug like a fact where you're addicted to the dopamine hit from watching the porn that's essentially like a drug addiction I hope that those applications help you guys so this brother I was talking to he explained temptation as imagine that you're a fish and so someone throws a bait in the water that you're attracted to that you want to taste that looks good but then obviously you're gonna get hooked and die if you go to the bait so instead of swimming towards the bait looking around it thinking about it so in my way and so that's a way to think about temptation too when something happens don't linger on it don't think about it so I think gossip is something I keep bringing up just because I feel like it affects everyone constantly and most of us aren't even aware of how much we gossip I heard a homily once saying that if you're pro-life you can't murder someone's reputation so if you start to have a negative thought about someone you're thinking of sharing it with people you're talking with but if you analyze and think about it more for things you don't like about that person that is also sinful so now if I have a judgmental thought about someone I immediately start thinking in my mind of firming things about them and I just praying for them for specific parts of their life and then if you are really judgmental person in that situation instead of saying something negative about the person you could start affirming them and saying out loud to the people you're hanging out with a firming things about someone who you had the temptation to gossip about the same guy I was talking to said that if he's ever attempted it starts to do sing a song in his head like a random song completely unrelated to this situation so whatever you need to distract yourself in the whole point with the Nicene Creed is that you trust so much in God and on his law the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 5 and the other Gospels is a parallel to Mount Sinai when Moses is getting the law and so Moses is gone getting the Ten Commandments in that short amount of time the people have already built up a golden calf are worshiping the golden calf going against the first commandment to worship no other gods except for God the Father Almighty maker of heaven and earth of all things visible and invisible so when you're dealing with temptation and you start saying the Nicene Creed it's exactly what you're doing in this situation we're instead of caving and doing something that is against God's law but that you think will be beneficial to you will help you be happy that is becoming an idol in your life in that you're trusting that you're trusting your own intuitions more than God's law I also think that going to regular confession is really really important because it keeps you accountable and it just keeps you in this mindset where you're analyzing your life analyzing what you're doing wrong and because of that you're aware of the escalator effects pulling you away from God something else I super recommend is the latte app it's the most amazing Catholic everything app and there's a confession feature on the app and you can actually go through and it's super detail-oriented any type of sin or temptation in every area of your life so if you go through that every single day or a couple times a week that will just hiding your awareness of ways that you're being did we turn away from God in your life then you didn't even realize you were dealing with and a third of the things on the app have to just do with yourself and your spiritual health and if you're taking care of your soul or not because like I said sin is brokenness with Augustine's view of sin it's not something that actually exists but it's just a degradation a lesser form not having complete meaning complete flourishing a lack Christianity is not at all an angry God hating humanity it is just fighting against brokenness wanting to be fully alive wanting all of our relationships our jobs our emotions to be fully alive okay so those are all my thoughts for this video definitely comment below your thoughts and your advice on fighting temptation and different sensations that you do want make sure to subscribe to my channel and also click the bell button next to the subscribe button it will give you notifications every time I upload a new video I love you guys so much and I will see you in my next video bye

11:00  John 20:21-23 21 Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.”22 When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.”

    10:30 Juan 20,21-23

😇💗Something that have helped me so much to keep away of living in a impure way with a girl is that I made a promise to GOD that I'll never be with a woman until I get married. Thousands of temptations, since 7 years ago. I'm figthing and facing evil energies and bad flesh wishes. This is just by the grace of GOD that I still here. Studing the bible in an intense way helps so much and also Prayers Groups like Catholic Charismatic Renewall, but most than all going to mass and receiving JESUS CHRIST in the holy Eucharist. Is very good to read about saints lives. GOD Bless 💗😊😇🙏

I am Orthodox and whenever I feel tempted, I begin to recite The Jesus Prayer. "Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God. Have mercy on me, a sinner." This prayer "burns" the demons and Satan. His attacks might be strong, but they cannot overcome the the power of that prayer. "Pray without ceasing." 1 Thessalonians 5:17. It works.

One thing I should pray for understanding for is repentance. I have a general idea, but it reminded me of your take on temptation. Whereas I totally understand that.
