Mormons dont believe they are literally baptizing the dead. Basically, they believe their church is the only true church and that doing a baptism in proxy for a dead person gives them a chance after they die to say yes or no to CHOOSING to be a mormon should they decide after they die and truth is revealed to them. Thats all Im gonna say on that…

I am Agnostic, but I truly believe in 'something' it's just that I am not sure what it is. These Mormons are playing with fire just like every Religion, the only difference from this method and the 'others' is that they are directly insulting individuals of other faiths. I dare any Mormon to publicly admit to doing something like this to a Muslim especially one known so well to history like Anne Frank.

Fire likes to burn anyone who plays with it.. I suggest non religious people stay out of this

and you should take into consideration that when we do proxy baptisms we still believe that the people who we are doing the baptisms for still have the 'choice' of whether or not to accept the ordinance that has been performed for them. so if did a proxy baptism for an atheist they could chose to accept the ordinance in the after life… or choose not to 😛

Else what shall thay do which are baptized for the dead, if the dead rise not? why baptized for the dead
This shows that in bibical times they did this practice. The dead do rise at the second coming so it is need. Also it is like are regular baptism just in the temple and we do it in behalf of someone. Their is no oils or anything just a it is very similair to the regular baptism.

As for your argument: If "they" did it in the Bible then it legitimizes our practice today. This is not even logical, let alone accurate. The Bible records many things of many people (following God and not) that God and the writers of the Bible do not condone. It's just history/background. I know LDS don't seem to get this (e.g.- polygamy) but the fact is this verse is the only one that mentions baptism for the dead and it is talking about other people, not Paul or the Church.

  35. spartacussucatraps Posted on June 25, 2012 at 1:43 pm

Although what the majority of LDS think about the temple garments is unknown, it is fact that many stories float around the culture of the LDS church and the greater mormon movement about how temple garments protected their wearer in accidents. So while I am sure LDS do not refer to it as "magic" and this term is obviously meant in derision, there is a real aspect to LDS culture to which it refers

The Old Testament has references to a baptismal font in Solomon's temple in 2 Chronicles 4, and the New Testament for proxy baptisms in 1 Corinthians 15:29. These other religions might not be as different or far-out as they seem at face value.

No, baptism for the dead does not mean they become Mormon. It is more to do with cleansing the spirit or something so it is given the opportunity to receive the teachings of the Mormon church from God in the afterlife. It doesn't coerce the spirit of the dead into becoming Mormon. That's my understanding of it anyway as having family who are Mormons.

However, I would also not be offended if people baptized dead Mormons into Judaism, or homosexuality (whatever that means), or atheism. And yes, like one of the comments underneath said, the dead have a choice whether or not to accept that baptism. But the important thing is to just give them that choice.

There's nothing like a bunch of snarky atheists mocking something that they have, at best, a peripheral knowledge of without even attempting to understand it first. And then they'll moan and wail about how religious people are intolerant towards people that they don't understand. Here is a quote from the Mormon church that addresses this misconception about baptism by proxy:

"Some people have misunderstood that when baptisms for the dead are performed, deceased persons are baptized into the Church against their will. This is not the case. Each individual has agency, or the right to choose. The validity of a baptism for the dead depends on the deceased person accepting it and choosing to accept and follow the Savior while residing in the spirit world. The names of deceased persons are not added to the membership records of the Church."

If you really want to understand the practice of baptism for the dead from the Mormon perspective, here is a link to several articles by the LDS church about that subject: https://www.lds.org/topics/baptisms-for-the-dead?lang=eng

This is full of blatant mistruths. Baptisms for the dead are performed almost identically to the way baptisms are done for the living. If you want to see it, ask a missionary and they will invite you to the next baptism. That being said, be respectful. It's a thing we consider sacred.

No one can make a dead person anything. Colbert cannot make Mormons Jews, you cannot make Mormons atheists, etc.

And WE cannot CAN NOT make any dead person a Mormon.

Goodness Cenk you haven't looked into it at all, have you? We do the ordinance for the dead, and their spirit can choose whether or not to accept it. It's not "you're now mormon", it's "you now have the option of being Mormon is you want". Please get informed.

Seeing yet another video of TYT bashing on Mormons only reinforces my faith in the Church of Jesus Crist of Latter-Day Saints aka Mormon. Mormons also have thick skin and are forgiving..so bash away and keep showing your intolerance.

Other religions baptize living people against their will or knowledge, but not the LDS church, in the LDS, you choose to be baptized at age 8 at the earliest.
